My practice

Welcome to Margriet Harmsen psychology
My name is Margriet, and I am a licensed GZ psychologist based in The Hague.
On this page, I would like to tell you more about my work with (expectant) parents, the treatments I offer, and the themes and challenges you may experience during parenthood. I will also explain how I can support you, whether individually or together as parents.
I offer short consultation sessions to help you think through a specific question or concern, as well as more extensive treatment programmes. I provide tratment with your child and partner and also provide trauma treatment for difficult or distressing experiences related to, among other things, fertility, pregnancy, childbirth, and other challenging experiences you may have gone through. In addition, I offer (trauma) treatment for parents and children together, as well as a mum-and-baby group where you can connect and exchange experiences with other parents.
I offer treatment in both Dutch and English. Sessions are available in person at my practice or online, and evening appointments are also possible.

Who am I
My name is Margriet Harmsen. I have been working as a psychologist for over 13 years and have extensive experience in both basic and specialist mental healthcare. I have been working as a GZ psychologist for the past four years and as an Infant Mental Health (IMH) specialist for the past two and a half years.
Through my experience, I have worked with a wide range of psychological concerns and difficulties, which means that you can come to me with many different questions and concerns. In addition, I have further specialised in working with very young children and their parents, and in the various themes and challenges that can arise during this stage of life (Infant Mental Health). I have also developed specific expertise in trauma treatment.
In my practice, I work within basic mental healthcare and provide treatment for mild psychological difficulties. I am unable to accept clients with highly complex, multiple or crisis-prone mental health problems in my practice.
I am registered in the Dutch BIG-register and am a member of the Dutch Institute of Psychologists (NIP).

Treatments

Therapeutic consultation
Drawing on my expertise as an Infant Mental Health (IMH) specialist and my experience working with parents and (young) children, I offer support around a wide range of themes and challenges that you may encounter during parenthood.
What does becoming a mother or father mean to you? How do you integrate parenthood with your own identity, and what happens when it also brings up ambivalent or negative feelings?
What different roles and responsibilities are you taking on, and how does becoming a parent bring you into contact with your own history — for example, your own upbringing or the role your parents played in your life?
What impact does fertility treatment have on you? And what if your pregnancy unfolds very differently, or is more difficult or less enjoyable than you had hoped?
What if parenthood is not what you expected, or turns out to be very different from what you imagined? And how do you continue to find and connect with each other as partners while navigating this new phase of life?
Unfortunately, these topics are still rarely discussed openly in our society.
I can offer a listening ear, help you make sense of what you are experiencing, and think things through with you. This can take the form of therapeutic sessions, but I also offer:

Short consultations
Short contact by phone, video call, WhatsApp, or a brief appointment at my practice, where I can offer a listening ear, help you put things into perspective, or think through a specific question or concern with you or both of you.

Family and Parent-Child Treatment
As a parent, or as parents together, you are also welcome to attend sessions with your child or children.
If you would like support in strengthening the bond between you and your child, I offer attachment-focused conversations and exercises aimed at enhancing your relationship and connection with your child.
Trauma Treatment – EMDR and Therapeutic Writing
When you have experienced something frightening, distressing, or deeply impactful, it can sometimes be difficult to process the experience on your own. The memories may remain associated with intense or unpleasant emotions, and you may experience symptoms such as avoidance, feeling stuck, intense emotions, or difficulties falling or staying asleep.
The period of trying to conceive, pregnancy, childbirth, and parenthood can also involve difficult or deeply impactful experiences, both for you personally and within your relationship.
Sometimes, becoming a parent can also bring unresolved experiences from earlier in your life to the surface. Experiences that you may not have fully processed can resurface as you enter parenthood yourself.
These experiences can not only lead to trauma-related symptoms and difficulties processing what has happened, but can also bring up strong emotions and questions about parenthood.
Common themes include: Am I a good enough parent? Feelings of intense guilt or failure, concerns about your child's attachment, or worries about feelings of anxiety or low mood that you may be experiencing. Many parents also worry that their own emotions or past experiences may have a significant impact on their child, their relationship with their child, or their child's attachment.
These themes and feelings can also be addressed effectively through EMDR or therapeutic writing, and I have extensive experience in working with these issues.

Treatment Together with Your Child and/or Partner
When appropriate, your partner and/or child can also be involved in the treatment.
For example, for very young children who have experienced preverbal trauma, such as a highly distressing birth, a combined treatment approach can be offered. In this type of treatment, you may first receive trauma treatment yourself, followed by Storytelling (an EMDR-based approach) for your child.

Mama & Baby Group
Are you looking for a relaxed and welcoming place where you and your baby can meet other mothers and babies, share experiences, and learn more about the beautiful — but sometimes also ambivalent and challenging — sides of motherhood?
Perhaps you recognise themes such as attachment, uncertainty, Who am I as myself versus who I am as a mother?, the many different roles that come with motherhood, asking for support from those around you, or finding your own village.
Then you are very welcome to join the Mama & Baby Group.
Each week, the first half hour of the group focuses on a particular theme, with Infant Mental Health (IMH) as the foundation. Afterwards, there is plenty of time to share experiences with one another. Each week, we also do a fun activity designed to further strengthen the connection between you and your baby.

Reimbursement

For 2026, I have not signed contracts with health insurers. This means that I work as a non-contracted healthcare provider.
I advise you to contact your health insurance company before registering and ask what percentage is reimbursed for a non-contracted healthcare psychologist (GZ-psychologist) in primary mental healthcare (basic GGZ). The health insurer will deduct the reimbursement from your mandatory deductible (eigen risico).
You will receive a monthly invoice that clearly states which consultations took place and what the costs are. You will need to pay the invoice yourself, after which you can submit it to your health insurer for reimbursement.
The amount reimbursed depends on your insurance policy:
-
With some restitution policies, a large part of the NZa rate may be reimbursed.
-
With in-kind (natura) or combination policies, a lower percentage is often reimbursed.
-
The exact reimbursement varies per insurer and per policy.
More information about working without contracts can be found at:
www.contractvrijepsycholoog.nl.
Register for treatment
You can register yourself for treatment using the registration form. After registering, you will be contacted by phone within a week for a brief introductory meeting, after which an intake interview can be scheduled. After this, we will determine the most appropriate treatment together. You do not need a referral for registration.
You can fill in the details on the registration form below.
Waiting time – update October 2026: none
The next intake interviews can be scheduled in October 2026.

Complaints
Are you dissatisfied with something or do you have a complaint about my care? I would be happy to discuss this with you and work together to find a solution.
If you do not wish or are unable to discuss your complaint with me directly, or if you would prefer independent support, you can contact Klachtenportaal Zorg. Klachtenportaal Zorg is an external organization with which I am affiliated to help resolve dissatisfaction and complaints regarding my care.
After submitting your complaint or concern, Klachtenportaal Zorg will assess whether it meets the conditions for handling and which procedure applies. If information is missing or unclear, they will contact you to complete the information and ensure that the complaints procedure can be properly initiated.
Would you like advice on how to deal with a situation you are dissatisfied with? You may also contact Klachtenportaal Zorg for advice without immediately starting a formal procedure.
You can submit your complaint using the complaint form on the Klachtenportaal Zorg website. You may also send an email to info@klachtenportaalzorg.nl.
